Cartoonists Lloyd Dangle and Jen Sorensen Will Be at Cody's Books
Oakland, CA (PRWEB) April 18, 2008 -- Cartoonists Jen Sorensen and Lloyd Dangle will show slides, read their comics, and crack wise at Cody's Books, Berkeley on Tuesday, April 22, at 7pm. They are promoting their new books, Sorensen's, "Slowpoke: One Nation, Oh My God! " and Dangle's, "Troubletown Told You So, Comics that Could've Saved Us from This Mess."
"Slowpoke: One Nation, Oh My God!" is the latest collection from nationally-syndicated cartoonist Jen Sorensen, and features 150 of her provocative strips, along with Jen's trenchant commentary. Deploying the trademark Slowpoke brand of absurdist humor, this volume chronicles our country's descent into the twilight of democracy zone, tackling everything from the Antique Ideology Roadshow to the rise of virtual donuts.
Jen Sorensen's cartoons have appeared in The Village Voice, Los Angeles Times, Ms. Magazine, Funny Times, The American Prospect, CampusProgress.org, and dozens of alternative newspapers around the country. Jen has also won several awards from the Association of Alternative Newsweeklies.
"Sly, quick and smart, Jen Sorensen's comic strip is nothing like its name. So don't be deceived-Slowpoke is going places."--Doonesbury creator Garry Trudeau
"In a world that seems to get murkier by the minute, Slowpoke is a freakin' beacon of lucidity."--Alison Bechdel, author of Fun Home

"Troubletown Told You So: Comics That Could've Saved Us From This Mess", is the newest collection of the nationally-syndicated weekly political cartoon, Troubletown--now celebrating 20 years since it first started in the San Francisco Bay Guardian--may be the definitive book on the reign of George Dubya Bush, complete with devastating caricatures and more snide comments than most writers can pack into a lifetime of books. Dan Savage (author and columnist of Savage Love) says Troubletown is, "Absolutely hilarious. The best political cartoon in the country."
And as a special bonus, Dangle will give a quick lesson on how to accurately caricature John McCain's extraordinarily lumpy face at the Berkeley appearance.
Lloyd Dangle's cartoons and illustrations have appeared in Entertainment Weekly, Mother Jones, The Nation, The New York Times, Village Voice and Wired and on packages of Airborne effervescent cold remedy.
"Troubletown by Lloyd Dangle is terrific." --Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons

Original comic art – living legacy of comic books
Most of us are very familiar with comic books and comic characters. For those who take a deeper interest in comics, the characters may seem as real as people in their lives. And they know the personality of the character very well. They in fact become so familiar with the character that they can anticipate the things that the character says and they can even mimic some of the character's comic expressions. In a sense the comic characters can seep into the lives of the character's fans as much as another human being can do.

Comic books and original comic art
Comic books have been staple for the young and even the old for a several decades. It is amazing how these static drawings are able to make comic book characters come alive. There are superhero, action, romance and even touching human interest stories that dwell in the folded pages of a comic book. Comic books are immensely popular because they are able to bridge the divide between a book and a movie, between a narration and an actualization and between reality and fantasy. And they do so with ease and much more cost effectively than any film. For a few thousand dollars an artist can produce a high quality comic book or for under an hundred dollars he or she can create an online comic.
